Stories of Strength

  • MALLIKA

A true testament to resilience, Mallika has faced not one, but three cancer diagnoses since 2021. Her journey began unexpectedly, but it was the shocking relapse of breast cancer from Stage 1 to Stage 4 that truly tested her spirit. As the person her family has always relied on, she now balances intensive hospital visits with her enduring role as a caregiver.

Instead of being defined by her diagnosis, Mallika chooses to embrace life with fierce determination, finding motivation and joy in volunteering and filling her days with purpose. Her story is a powerful lesson in her personal mantra, a reminder to herself and the world to "Accept and move on!"

  • ESTHER

After a few friends were diagnosed with cancer, Esther went for a mammogram and learned she had Stage 1 breast cancer. For someone used to being a caregiver, the role reversal was difficult — but with the support of her community, she found the strength to face treatment with grace.

Today, two years after beating cancer, Esther has channeled her energy into joyful new pursuits, from volunteering with children's reading programs to lifting her voice in a choir. Her journey is a powerful testament that a diagnosis isn't an end but a chance to embrace life with renewed purpose, beautifully embodying her message to herself: "You can continue to pursue your passion. Life doesn't need to slow down."

  • SU LIN

At 41, Su Lin was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer when her son was just seven months old. As a new mother, the news was devastating. Having always placed her family and career first, the diagnosis became a powerful reminder to turn her focus toward her own health and well-being.

Far from being a lonely journey, she found a pillar of strength in the immense support from her loved ones and the Singapore Cancer Society. This experience has given her a profound new perspective, perfectly captured in her message: "Dear Time, Restart." For Su Lin, this isn't about erasing the past, but about embracing a precious second chance to rediscover and prioritize herself.

3 EASY STEPS FOR MONTHLY SELF EXAMINATION

Examine yourself 7 to 10 days after the start of your period, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender.

  • Look

Examine your breasts in a mirror with hands on hips. Look out for changes in breast shape, redness/rash and nipple abnormalities. Raise your arms above your head to look for changes (especially dimples) on the underside of your breasts.

  • Touch

Touch and feel your breast while lying down or in the shower, with your middle 3 fingers. Press down with your fingers and move in a circular motion. Be sure to cover the whole breast, from the outer area towards the nipple. Gently squeeze your nipple to check for any discharge.

  • Check

Check for lumps by examining your entire breast from your armpit to your cleavage with different pressure.
