What Is Mother of Pearl (MOP)?

Mother of pearl, also known as MOP, is the lustrous inner lining found within the shells of certain mollusks, including oysters, mussels, and abalone. It is scientifically known as nacre - the same substance that is secreted by the mollusk in response to an irritant, eventually forming a pearl.

One of its most distinctive qualities is its natural variation in colour, which depends on the species of mollusk and where it is found. This gem occurs in a range of opalescent tones, from cooler shades of white, silver, and blue to warmer hues of pink, gold, and green.

White mother of pearl, often derived from the Pinctada Maxima oyster, ranges from bright white to soft undertones of pink or blue, sometimes with subtle golden reflections.

Darker varieties, such as Pinctada Margaritifera (black-lipped mother of pearl), display deeper tones with iridescent hints of green, purple, and pink.

Abalone shells, including New Zealand Paua, are known for their more vibrant blues, greens, and purples, while certain freshwater shells can produce softer pink hues.

Mother of Pearl vs Pearl: What’s The Difference?

Mother of pearl and pearls are often mistaken for one another. In reality, both are natural and made from nacre. The difference lies in where they develop: mother of pearl forms along the inner shell lining, while pearls form as layers build around an irritant inside the mollusk.

HOW MOTHER OF PEARL IS FORMED

Mother of pearl is formed naturally inside the shells of certain mollusks, such as oysters and abalone.

It develops as layers of nacre are secreted by the mollusk, gradually building up along the inner lining of the shell. This nacre is made up of microscopic layers that reflect light, which is what gives mother of pearl its soft, iridescent sheen.

Over time, these layers continue to form and smooth out the interior of the shell, creating the lustrous surface known as mother of pearl.


HOW A PEARL IS FORMED

A pearl forms when an irritant, such as a tiny particle or parasite, enters a mollusk like an oyster.

In response, the mollusk coats the irritant with layers of nacre — the same substance that lines its shell. Over time, these layers build up, gradually forming a smooth, rounded pearl. This process takes place within the mollusk’s natural environment, where water movement and conditions influence how the nacre forms and develops.

The longer this process continues, the more layers are formed, giving the pearl its lustre and depth.

Types of Mother of Pearl Finishes

Mother of pearl can be worked in different ways, each highlighting a different quality of the material.


CARVED MOTHER OF PEARL

Carved mother of pearl is created from thicker sections of shell, allowing the material to be shaped into more dimensional forms. These pieces are first cut into solid blanks, then carefully handcarved and refined to achieve the desired motif.

Because mother of pearl is made up of layered nacre, carving reveals subtle variations in tone beneath the surface. This gives each piece a softer, more organic character, with iridescence that shifts slightly as it catches the light.


POLISHED / SMOOTH MOTHER OF PEARL

Polished mother of pearl is cut from flatter sections of shell and shaped into thin, even pieces. Rather than being carved, the surface is carefully smoothed and finished to preserve the natural nacre in its original form.

Because the top layer remains largely intact, it reflects light more evenly across the surface, resulting in a clean, consistent sheen. This gives polished mother of pearl its signature smooth finish and more uniform appearance.

How To Care For Your Mother of Pearl Jewelry

To keep your pieces looking their best:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water, especially hot water and steam
  • Remove before swimming — chlorine and saltwater can damage the surface
  • Keep away from perfumes, lotions, and cleaning products
  • Store separately in a soft pouch to prevent scratches
  • Avoid direct sunlight and heat, which may affect colour over time
  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear
  • For a deeper clean, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately


To restore the shine of Mother of Pearl: Gently wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth, followed by a dry microfiber cloth. This is usually sufficient to bring back its soft lustre. Avoid using oils, harsh cleaners, or polishing agents, as these can leave residue or affect the nacre over time.

In some cases, a very small amount of mineral oil may enhance its surface sheen, but this should be used sparingly and wiped off thoroughly to avoid buildup.
