What Is Enamel Jewelry? How It Is Made, History, & Care Guide

返回網誌

Enamel jewelry is loved for its vibrant colours, glossy finish, and artistic details that make each piece feel genuinely personal.

From its long history in jewelry craftsmanship to its place in contemporary accessories, enamel continues to stand out for its decorative appeal and lasting wear. In this guide, we explore what enamel jewelry is, how different techniques are used to create it, and how to care for it properly.

What is Enamel Jewelry?

Enamel jewelry has been crafted since ancient civilizations in Egypt and Greece, admired for its ability to bring color and intricate detailing into jewelry design. Today, it is recognized for its glossy or matte finish, rich long-lasting colors, and expressive motifs — from florals to symbolic charms.

Creating enamel jewelry requires precision. Layers of enamel are carefully applied onto metal and fired multiple times to build depth, texture, and fine detail. Because of this versatility, enamel allows designers to work with expressive illustrations and decorative storytelling in wearable form.

The enduring appeal of enamel has attracted attention across the fashion world. Publications like Vogue have noted the cheerful, whimsical quality that makes enamel pieces feel uplifting and distinctive. Fashion platform PORTER by Net-a-Porter also described enamel as “cool, colorful, and collectible,” while Angelina Chen, senior vice president of Christie’s jewelry department, noted the exceptional depth of color that skilled enameling can achieve — a richness that few other jewelry techniques can replicate.

That same quality is part of why enamel jewelry continues to trend through the warmer months. Bright enamel rings, charms, earrings, and pendants pair naturally with light fabrics and relaxed summer outfits, adding a personal touch to everyday styling.

At Mondays Made, enamel jewelry is valued for combining cheerful color, personal expression, and considered craftsmanship — pieces designed to be worn, not kept.

Types of Enamel Techniques

Different enameling techniques have developed over centuries, each producing its own textures, colors, and artistic effects.

CLOISONNÉ

Cloisonné is one of the oldest enameling techniques, first practiced by ancient Greek goldsmiths. In this method, thin metal wires form small compartments on the surface of the jewelry, which are then filled with enamel to create colorful, intricate patterns. The technique later became especially associated with Chinese and Japanese enamel artistry.

CHAMPLEVÉ

Champlevé is similar to cloisonné, but instead of using metal wires, artisans carve recessed areas directly into the metal surface before filling them with enamel. This creates a stronger contrast between the enamel and metal, resulting in a deeper and more textured appearance.

HAND-PAINTED ENAMEL

Hand-painted enamel is created by applying enamel directly onto the metal surface by hand before firing it at high temperatures. This technique allows for softer illustrations and detailed motifs, which Mondays Made also applies in the Doodles of Joy collection to create playful and expressive jewelry designs.

Other techniques exist, though they appear less often in contemporary jewelry. Basse-taille layers translucent enamel over engraved metal patterns. Plique-à-jour creates a stained-glass-like effect without a metal backing. Guilloché combines enamel with decorative engraved surfaces beneath.

Is Enamel Jewelry Safe for Sensitive Skin?

Enamel is non-reactive and generally safe for most skin types. Because enamel is applied as a coating over the metal surface, it also helps minimize direct contact between skin and the base material.

In most cases, skin sensitivity depends more on the underlying metal than on the enamel itself. At Mondays Made:

  • We use S925 sterling silver bases with 18k gold, 18k rose gold, and rhodium vermeil plating - five times thicker than standard plating
  • Our pieces are nickel-free, making them suitable for most sensitive skin

When enamel is paired with high-quality, skin-safe materials, it is comfortable for all-day wear.
